DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond; each has an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolutionary War is eligible to join. The DAR Genealogical Research System (GRS) includes free online databases containing information on Revolutionary War Patriots and descendants of those Patriots, as well as the vast array of genealogical resources from the DAR Library.

Most of DAR’s volunteer work is accomplished by the grassroots efforts of chapters on the local level which focus on the mission areas of DAR by encouraging members to become involved in these initiatives in their local communities. DAR’s main initiatives are to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
